Colic is defined as the manifestation of abdominal visceral pain that can be the result of
gastrointestinal or non-gastrointestinal pain, this is classified as acute, chronic or recurrent
(Smith, 2015). Chronic and intermittent colic itself is defined as a horse that experiences
more than two episodes of acute abdominal syndrome in a 12-month period and can be
attributed to a variety of causes (Robinson, 2015). The following is a case report of a 5-
year-old Colombian Creole mare admitted to the Equimedic clinic with a history of recurrent
colic for approximately 2 months, those colics were treated by a field veterinarian who
instituted medical treatment with apparent improvement; However, a definitive resolution
was not presented, thus referring it to the clinic, there he proceeded to perform rectal
examination, transrectal ultrasound and exploratory laparotomy as surgical treatment, thus
determining the presence of a pedunculated lipoma and hypoplasia in a segment of the left
dorsal colon as a definitive diagnosis
