Based on the existing colombian and world wide statistics, a brief analysis of the development of the maize crop during the last decades is made. Both the cultivated area and the production increased from 1960 to 1990, afterwards a constant reduction up to 1998 is reported and from than on a recuperation is observed. Up to 1990 the country was practically self-sufficient ¡n attending the human and animal consumption requirements of maize and sorghum. Starting from this year, the internal demand of yellow maize increased considerabely as a consequence of the balanced foods industry growth, the dynamics of aviculture and the reduction in the national production of sorghum. This increase in demand had to be attended with an increase in imports, which passed from 14.0001 in 1990 to 1.831.706 in 2000, converting maize in the main agricultural import product. Maize is planted under two farming systems: with technology and traditionaily. The traditional system has been very important, both as supplier and as employment generator. Up to the eighties it represented 85% of the cultivated area and 72% of the production. By the year 2000 it conformed 75% of the area and 55.8% of the production, observing an important increase in the technical production. Although the national maize shows competitive problems compared with the imported product, the technological advances attained and the effort to be realized in zones near comsumption centers and with high production potential, allow to expect, at a médium term, a competitive production and a reduction on the dependence of importations.eng
