Grassland primary productivity is the function that underpins the majority of the fodder production in cattle-rearing silvopastoral farms. Hence, understanding the factors that determine grassland productivity is critical for the design and management of silvpastoral systems. We studied the effect of two factors with documented impact on grassland productivity in seasonally dry silvopastures of Nicaragua, rainfall and trees. We assessed the effects of three species that differed in crown size and phenology, one evergreen, Cassia grandis, and two deciduous species, Guazuma ulmifolia and Tabebuia rosea. Overall, grassland ANPP had a quadratic response to rainfall, with a decline at high rainfall that coincided with peak standing biomass and grassland cover. Trees had a predominately negative effect on grassland productivity, and the effect was concentrated in the rainy season at peak productivity. The effect of the trees corresponded with the tree crown area, but not with crown density. Trees reduced the standing biomass of graminoids and increased forb biomass; thus, the effect of trees on grassland ANPP appears in part to respond to changes in grassland composition. We also found higher levels of soil moisture content below the tree canopy, particularly at the peak of the rainy season when soils tend to become waterlogged. The evergreen species, C. grandis, affected grassland ANPP more strongly than the deciduous species.

Las evaluaciones genéticas convencionales han estado enmarcadas en la estimación de valores genéticos a partir de los sistemas de ecuaciones de modelos mixtos que consideran efectos aleatorios y fijos simultáneamente. En los últimos años, el desarrollo de tecnologías de secuenciación del genoma ha permitido obtener información genómica que puede ser incluida en las evaluaciones genéticas para incrementar las confiabilidades y el progreso genético, así como para disminuir el intervalo generacional. El mejor predictor lineal insesgado en una etapa es una metodología que incluye información genómica, reemplazando la matriz de parentesco por una matriz que combina el parentesco por pedigrí y el parentesco genómico de una población genotipada, permitiendo la estimación de valores genéticos para animales no genotipados. El objetivo de este artículo de revisión fue la descripción de la metodología y sus recientes avances, así como conocer algunas de las estrategias que podrían ser llevadas a cabo cuando el número de animales genotipados es bajo.

Technical and administrative characterization of small-holder milk production systems in a central region of Colombia

The objective of this work was to carry out the technical-administrative characterization of smallholder of milk production systems located in the village of El Peñón, in the town of Sibaté/Colombia. The study was carried out during the months of November/2016 to April/2017. The information was obtained through semi-structured interviews with 18 producers. For the identification of the systems, technical-productive variables were investigated and the characterization included the analysis of components: a) Location, biophysical aspects, landscape, use and land management; b) Forage resources and food; c) Animal resources; d) Reproduction and health; e) Milk production, livestock marketing and business management; f) Handing, infrastructure and equipment; and g) Owner information. A cluster analysis and multiple correspondences analysis using the statistical package SAS (Statistical analysis system, version 9.4). The results of the cluster analysis were shown the conformation of 8 groups classified as: specialized dairy, semispecialized, smallholder and small farm given to heterogeneity of the productive model. Five smallholder systems were identified, the analysis of multiple correspondences showed a relationship between qualitative variables and components evidencing a technological model based on a semi-intensive production with adequate infrastructure and acquisition of low cost technology with low validated feeding strategies. The use of low genetic quality animal resources with reduced implementation of breeding programs and reproductive biotechnologies and healthy plans and the lack of practices of animal welfare and good milking practices. Additionally, limited marketing networks and business management strategies. In conclusion, the systems are developed in heterogeneous conditions, which is due to the formulation of different production models. The characterization of smallholder systems is necessary to identify technological recommendations and the intervention of policies for the improvement and strengthening of productive systems.
