Was evaluated the effect of heat stress on reproductive performance of bulls in the Municipality of Florence - Caquetá, by applying objective indicator of risk of suffering heat stress - temperature and humidity index (THI). We performed a retrospective, taking weather data generated weather station Macagual CIMAZ experimental center at the University of Amazonia, collected between the period of 1977 to 2005, these data were applied formulas ITH calculations reported by Hahn (1999), Valtorta and Gallardo (1996), Kibler (2000); the results were correlated with bull semen evaluations belonging to Zebu breed group collected during the year 1998. It was determined during the study period, all the months of the year are on the alert scale of suffering heat stress (THI 71- 78) of LWSI (P ≤ 0.05). Being November, December, January and February are the months of greatest risk, in turn, represent the month of January increased risk and July the least risky. No statistically significant differences were found between the applied ITH (P ≤ 0.05). Moreover evidenced the influence of ITH on semen quality, and that as this increase were affected sperm parameters such as concentration, primary abnormalities and volume.

La variabilidad espacial del rendimiento de los cultivos esta relacionada con los atributos del terreno y la profundidad del suelo. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la utilidad de los modelos de elevación digital (DEM) y profundidad de suelo para delimitar zonas de manejo homogéneas en lotes de producción. Se calcularon atributos del terreno extraídos del DEM (elevación, pendiente, curvatura plana y flujo de acumulación) y se analizó su relación espacial con el rendimiento de los cultivos y la profundidad del suelo en un lote de 47ha ubicado en el partido de Lobería, Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Las campañas agrícolas analizadas fueron 2007/08 (soja), 2009/10 (trigo) y 2010/11 (soja). Se evaluó mediante ANOVA la significancia de las diferencias entre las potenciales zonas de manejo. Los atributos del terreno y profundidad de suelo explicaron entre un 67 y 90% de la variación del rendimiento de los cultivos. Además, permitieron delimitar zonas de manejo significativamente diferentes (p≤0,05). Los resultados sugieren que los datos de DEM y de profundidad de suelo pueden explicar la variabilidad espacial del rendimiento y constituyen una herramienta para delimitar zonas de manejo para orientar el manejo sitio-específico.

Different polymorphisms in clock genes have been studied in healthy humans, providing inconsistent results in different populations. In this study, we evaluated the possibility that two non-synonymous polymorphisms in PER2 (p.Gly1244Glu, rs934945) and PER3 (p.Met1028Thr, rs2640909) genes might be associated with diurnal preference in healthy Colombian subjects. A total of 209 Colombian university students were genotyped for two functional polymorphisms in PER2 and PER3 genes (rs934945 and rs2640909). We applied the composite scale of morningness (CSM) to measure phenotypic patterns of human diurnal preference. Additionally, we extracted from the CSM three subscale scores (“morningness”, “activity planning” and “morning alertness”).We used a false discovery rate approach (q values)for correction of multiple testing. PER2 (rs934945) showed a significant association with two CSM subscale scores: “activity planning” and “morning alertness”. For PER3 (rs2640909), we observed an association with the “morningness” CSM subscale scores. We found a significant association between novel and functional polymorphisms in PER2 and PER3 genes with specific CSM subscales for diurnal preference. We showed for the first time the association of rs934945 with “morning alertness” and rs2640909 with “morningness”. We suggest that these results should be replicated in order to confirm the association in other populations. Finally, the study of additional novel functional polymorphisms in other clock genes could be of relevance for a deep understanding of circadian phenotypes and neuropsychiatric disorders

Type II diabetes mellitus and menopause: a multinational study

Background Type II diabetes mellitus causes metabolic changes that may lead to early menopause and worsen climacteric symptoms. Objectives To determine the risk factors for type II diabetes mellitus and assess the impact of this disease on the age of menopause and on climacteric symptoms. Methods A total of 6079 women aged between 40 and 59 years from 11 Latin American countries were requested to answer the Menopause Rating Scale and Goldberg Anxiety-Depression Scale. Results The prevalence of diabetes was 6.7%. Diabetes mellitus was associated with arterial hypertension (odds ratio (OR) 4.49; 95% confi dence interval (CI) 3.47 – 5.31), the use of psychotropic drugs (OR 1.54; 95% CI 1.22 – 1.94), hormonal therapy (OR 1.46; 95% CI 1.11 – 1.92), 50 years of age (OR 1.48; 95% CI 1.17 – 1.86), overweight or obese (OR 1.47; 95% CI 1.15 – 1.89), and waist circumference 88 cm (OR 1.32; 95% CI 1.06 – 1.65). Factors associated with lower risk of diabetes were the use of hormonal contraceptives (OR 0.55; 95% CI 0.35 – 0.87), alcohol (OR 0.73; 95% CI 0.54 – 0.98) and living in cities 2500 meters above sea level (OR 0.70; 95% CI 0.53 – 0.91) or with high temperatures (OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.51 – 0.88). In turn, diabetes tripled the risk of menopause in women under 45 years of age. Diabetes did not increase the risk of deterioration of quality of life due to climacteric symptoms. Conclusion Menopause does not increase the risk of type II diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is associated with early menopause in women under 45 years of age.

Los peces bentónicos presentan diferentes estrategias de adaptación y diferentes grados de asociación con el sustrato. El objetivo de este estudio es describir las características morfológicas y morfométricas de otolitos de cuatro especies de peces bentónicos de la costa de Valencia y estudiar la relación entre estas caracterisitcas de los otolitos con el sustrato. Las sagittae analizadas pertenecen a las siguientes especies: Scorpaena scrofa Linnaeus, 1758 (N = 40), Mullus surmuletus Linnaeus, 1758 (N = 29), Uranoscopus scaber Linnaeus, 1758 (N = 24) y Synaptura lusitanica Capello, 1868 (N = 121). Los peces fueron sexados, se midió la longitud total (lt) en mm, y las sagittae fueron extraídas para examinar su morfología y morfometría. Se calculó el índice E (= ancho máximo de los otolitos (OW) / máxima longitud del otolito (OL) %) y S (superficie del sulcus (SS) / superficie del otolito (OS) %). El índice morfométrico E mostró una tendencia hacia una forma alargada o circular y el índice S mostró una tendencia de la mácula nerviosa a tener una mayor superficie de captación de información para transmitir al cerebro del pez. El análisis de la morfología y morfometría de los otolitos reveló la existencia de diferentes patrones eco-morfológicos asociados con el uso del hábitat y el tipo de sustrato donde los peces se encuentran con mayor frecuencia. Los índices E y S han demostrado ser útiles para discriminar entre las sagittae de peces que hacen un uso diferencial de la columna de agua y que están asociados a diferentes tipos de sustratos.

In this context, the p53null H1299 and wt-p53 H460 NSCLC cells, in the absence and presence of piﬁthrin-m (PFTm), an inhibitor of p53 mitochondrial-translocation, were treated with CA-4 and different cellular endpoints were analysed. In contrast to previous observationsinH460cells,CA-4failedintheactivationofanapoptoticresponseinH1299cells,thusindicatinganinvolvement of p53 in the cell death induced by the drug. We found that CA-4 led to p53 cellular re-localisation in H460 cells; in particular, p53 was released from the microtubular network and accumulated at mitochondria where it interacts with Bim protein and other proteins of the Bcl-2 (B-cell leukaemia-2) family, leading to cytochrome c release, alteration in the mitochondrial membrane polarisation, cell cycle arrest at the G2/M-phase, and cell death. Interestingly, the cytosolic and the mitochondrial accumulation of protein Bim was strictly dependent on p53 status. The extent of cell death was not reduced in H460 after combinedtreatmentofPFTmwithCA-4.Overall,thedatasupportamodelofCA-4-inducedapoptosisinNSCLC,forwhichthe expression of p53 protein is essential, but its mitochondrial function, linked to p53-transcription independent apoptosis pathway, is negligible.

Para analizar la calidad poscosecha de la uchuva, el segundo fruto de exportación de Colombia, frutos desarrollados bajo invernadero de plástico en plantas regadas con una solución nutritiva ausente en fósforo (P), magnesio (Mg) y calcio (Ca), comparado con el testigo (solución completa), fueron almacenados a 1°C (91% humedad relativa [HR]) o 19°C (68% HR) durante un tiempo de 30 días. En los frutos, empacados con cáliz a razón de 100 g por canastillas de plástico, recubiertas con papel vinipel, se realizaron pruebas químicas, físicas y sensoriales, cada 3 días. Al inicio del almacenamiento los frutos del testigo alcanzaron el mayor peso fresco y el rajado de los frutos fue mayor en los deficientes de Mg (11,30%), mucho más alto que en los deficientes de Ca (0,79%). Durante el almacenamiento los frutos deficientes en P mostraron las mayores pérdidas de peso fresco. Los frutos, almacenados a 19°C, presentaron los valores más altos de acidez total titulable (ATT), mientras los sólidos solubles totales (SST) fueron más bajos, comparado con los frutos mantenidos a 1°C. Debido a este comportamiento, la relación de madurez (SST/ATT) fue más alta en los frutos almacenados a la temperatura baja. En el panel sensorial, los frutos del testigo (19°C), resultaron mejores en apariencia y color, mientras que los almacenados a 1°C tuvieron mejor sabor. A esta temperatura baja y carente en Mg, los frutos presentaron buen aroma y sabor, pero los menos aceptados fueron los con deficiencia en P y Ca.

La Helicobacter pylori ha colonizado la mitad de la población mundial; su infección presenta una prevalencia del 70% al 90% en países en vía de desarrollo y del 25% al 50% en países industrializados. Está establecido que la infección se asocia con el desarrollo de gastritis crónica, úlcera gástrica y duodenal y con cáncer de estómago en el humano. Helicobacter pylori fue la primera bacteria patógena para la cual se dedujo el interactoma y por análisis topológicos se identificaron 702 proteínas involucradas en 1359 interacciones con una cobertura del 97,7% con escala libre; es decir, que el interactoma contiene proteínas topológicamente esenciales. Sin embargo, dichas proteínas y sus asociaciones fisiológicas no han sido descritas, perdiendo de esta manera la posibilidad de identificar posibles blancos terapéuticos. Con el objetivo de identificar proteínas topológicamente esenciales se realizó una reconstrucción del interactoma de la cepa H. pylori ATCC 26695 empleando los complementos BioNetBuilder y NetworkAnalyzer de Cytoscape y la aplicación web cytoHubba. La reconstrucción presentó 896 proteínas y 2416 interacciones con una cobertura del 96% del proteoma ajustada a la distribución de ley de potencias, es decir, presentó escala libre. Usando NetworkAnalyzer y la aplicación Hubba se identificaron proteínas esenciales según los parámetros K y BC; con las que se construyó una subred. El análisis de esta subred mostró que el sistema de secreción tipo IV interactúa con subsistemas metabólicos de lípidos, aminoácidos y ácidos nucleicos por medio de proteínas, para las cuales esta interacción no había sido sugerida. Además, estas interacciones son explicables por perfiles de expresión dependientes del pH, adhesión y homeostasis del hierro; lo cual permite complementar tanto la biología básica de la cepa como postular nuevos blancos terapéuticos putativos.

The molecular study of circadian rhythms in humans could be an excellent approach to understand the relation between genes and behavior. It is possible that variations in genes involved in neurotransmission and/or synaptic plasticity, such as catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and serotonin transporter (SLC6A4) could be of particular interest in understanding human circadian phenotypes. The aim of this study is to analyze the possible and novel associations of the functional polymorphisms in COMT and SLC6A4 genes (Val158Met and 5-HTTLPR) and circadian phenotypes in healthy Colombian subjects. 191 university students were genotyped for two functional polymorphisms in COMT and SLC6A4 genes (rs4680 and rs4795541). We applied two scales to measure phenotypic patterns of human circadian rhythms: Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). We found a significant association between 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and morning preference score (CSM) (p = 0.027) using an overdominant genotypic model and association of COMT Val158Met with daytime sleepiness (ESS scores) (p = 0.038) in a genotypic recessive model. These results were supported by differences in genotype frequencies between circadian typologies for SLC6A4 gene (p = 0.007) and categories of diurnal sleepiness for COMT gene (p = 0.032). Our results suggest, for the first time, a significant relationship between functional SLC6A4 and COMT polymorphisms with specific human circadian phenotypes: morning preference and diurnal sleepiness. These results need to be replicated in other populations. Further study of functional polymorphisms in other synaptic genes could be of relevance for the identification of novel candidate genes for circadian phenotypes, and related endophenotypes of neuropsychiatric importance, in healthy humans.

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is one of the main causes of car and industrial accidents and it is associated with increased morbidity and alterations in quality of life. Prevalence of EDS in the general population around the world ranges from 6.2 to 32.4%, with a heritability of 38–40%. However, few studies have explored the role of candidate genes in EDS. Monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) gene has an important role in the regulation of neurotransmitter levels and a large number of human behaviors. We hypothesized that a functional VNTR in the promoter region of the MAOA gene might be associated with daytime sleepiness in healthy individuals. The Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) was applied to 210 Colombian healthy subjects (university students), which were genotyped for MAOA-uVNTR. MAOA-uVNTR showed a significant association with ESS scores (p = 0.01): 3/3 genotype carriers had the lowest scores. These results were supported by differences in MAOA-uVNTR frequencies between diurnal somnolence categories (p = 0.03). Our finding provides evidence for the first time that MAOA-uVNTR has a significant association with EDS in healthy subjects. Finally, these data suggest that functional variations in MAOA gene could have a role in other phenotypes of neuropsychiatric relevance.

Las larvas de especies de Eleodes, conocidas como falsos gusanos alambres, han sido registradas atacando ocasionalmente, semillas y plántulas de diversas especies vegetales en el Altiplano Cundi- Boyacense en Colombia, es decir en clima frío. Ahora, sin embargo, se perfila como plaga de importancia agrícola en plantas bajo techo, a una temperatura promedio de ~24°C. En este trabajo se evaluó y caracterizó el daño, observado por primera vez, que causaron las larvas del tenebrionido, determinado como Eleodes longicollis puctigerus Blaisdell actuando como trozadores a plántulas de tomate, variedad Larga Vida, en un invernadero localizado en la Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas y Ambientales U.D.C.A. El porcentaje de plántulas trozadas recién trasplantadas, varía del 15 al 72%, exigiendo la resiembra, incrementando considerablemente el costo de producción. Se determinó una relación estadísticamente significativa con un coeficiente de correlación de Spearman de 0.92 entre el porcentaje de plantas afectadas y el promedio de larvas. La aplicación de un cebo tóxico a base de carbaryl controló eficientemente a la plaga, causando una alta mortalidad larval, basado en la cual se estimó la población que existía en el invernadero. Este registro podría ser de importancia para otras áreas cultivadas con tomate, ya que Eleodes tiene una amplia distribución desde Canadá hasta México y, probablemente, aun mucho más al sur.

El trauma abdominal ocurre cuando éste compartimento orgánico sufre la acción violenta de agentes que generan lesiones de diferente magnitud y gravedad produciendo varias afecciones a nivel visceral. En traumas severos el paciente pueda presentar signologa asociada a un Síndrome de Respuesta Inflamatoria Sistémica (SIRS), que en la mayoría de los casos concluye en Falla Multiorganica (FMO) muerte. En este articulo se dará a conocer el caso clínico de un paciente que ingreso a la clínica por un traumatismo abdominal severo secundario a mordida por congénere. Debido a la mala condición en la que se encontraba al momento , se desarrollo un procedimiento quirúrgico de control de daños (control quirúrgico de la hemorragia y retiro de material necrótico o contaminado), pero dentro de la evolución se presento un deterioro progresivo de su condición que se asocio al desarrollo de SIRS que concluyo en la muerte del paciente. En este trabajo se abordaran diversos métodos de diagnóstico, signos clínicos y metodología terapéutica que permite prevenir el desarrollo de FMO.

Determinants of grassland primary production in seasonally-dry silvopastoral systems in Central America

Grassland primary productivity is the function that underpins the majority of the fodder production in cattle-rearing silvopastoral farms. Hence, understanding the factors that determine grassland productivity is critical for the design and management of silvpastoral systems. We studied the effect of two factors with documented impact on grassland productivity in seasonally dry silvopastures of Nicaragua, rainfall and trees. We assessed the effects of three species that differed in crown size and phenology, one evergreen, Cassia grandis, and two deciduous species, Guazuma ulmifolia and Tabebuia rosea. Overall, grassland ANPP had a quadratic response to rainfall, with a decline at high rainfall that coincided with peak standing biomass and grassland cover. Trees had a predominately negative effect on grassland productivity, and the effect was concentrated in the rainy season at peak productivity. The effect of the trees corresponded with the tree crown area, but not with crown density. Trees reduced the standing biomass of graminoids and increased forb biomass; thus, the effect of trees on grassland ANPP appears in part to respond to changes in grassland composition. We also found higher levels of soil moisture content below the tree canopy, particularly at the peak of the rainy season when soils tend to become waterlogged. The evergreen species, C. grandis, affected grassland ANPP more strongly than the deciduous species.

Metagenomic analysis of the gastric microbiota cultivable from a patient with gastritis concomitant with Barrett’s esophagus

Barrett’s esophagus is a distal metaplasia characterized by the transformation of squamous mucosa into columnar mucosa. This esophageal phenotype is a product not only of the chronic reflux of gastric acids, but also by microorganisms that colonize the oral cavity and stomach. Two classes of microbiota can be identified in Barrett’s esophagus; microbiota type I is associated with the normal esophagus and type II with an inflamed esophagus. The present study describes the gastric microbiota of a patient with antral gastritis concomitant with Barrett’s esophagus absent infection with Helicobacter pylori. Gastric biopsies were obtained following the protocol of Sydney and following ethical practices. The isolates were cultivated under microaerophilic conditions on Columbia Agar supplemented with IsoVitaleX™ and 7% sterile blood. Extracted DNA was sequenced using 454-GS and the results analyzed on the MG-RAST server. Gram negative isolates were found and bacteria resistant to levofloxacin, amoxicillin, tetracycline, erythromycin, and clarithromycin. The phyla Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Fusobacteria and Proteobacteria, the genus Bacteroides and the species group Bacteroides fragilis were most abundant. Functionally, the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids, and to a lesser extent, the metabolism of cofactors and vitamins were most dominant, and of which the enzymes β-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.21), β-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23) and β-N-acetylhexosaminidase (EC 3.2.1.52) were most dominant. The findings of this study, because they are of only one case may probably suggest a possible pathogenic role, previously undescribed for Bacteroides fragilis, associated with human gastritis when concomitant esophageal pathology exists.

The predicts database: a global database of how local terrestrial biodiversity responds to human impacts

Biodiversity continues to decline in the face of increasing anthropogenic pressures such as habitat destruction, exploitation, pollution and introduction of alien species. Existing global databases of species’ threat status or population time series are dominated by charismatic species. The collation of datasets with broad taxonomic and biogeographic extents, and that support computation of a range of biodiversity indicators, is necessary to enable better understanding of historical declines and to project – and avert – future declines. We describe and assess a new database of more than 1.6 million samples from 78 countries representing over 28,000 species, collated from existing spatial comparisons of local‐scale biodiversity exposed to different intensities and types of anthropogenic pressures, from terrestrial sites around the world. The database contains measurements taken in 208 (of 814) ecoregions, 13 (of 14) biomes, 25 (of 35) biodiversity hotspots and 16 (of 17) megadiverse countries. The database contains more than 1% of the total number of all species described, and more than 1% of the described species within many taxonomic groups – including flowering plants, gymnosperms, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, beetles, lepidopterans and hymenopterans. The dataset, which is still being added to, is therefore already considerably larger and more representative than those used by previous quantitative models of biodiversity trends and responses. The database is being assembled as part of the PREDICTS project (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems – www.predicts.org.uk). We make site‐level summary data available alongside this article. The full database will be publicly available in 2015.

Mamíferos de la hacienda las mercedes, un área rural al norte de Bogotá, Colombia

Los ecosistemas naturales de la Sabana de Bogotá han sufrido considerables cambios al transformarse la mayoría de sus bosques y humedales en la selva de cemento donde está situado el mayor asentamiento humano de Colombia. A pesar de esto, la Sabana, aún conserva especies silvestres pero es poco lo que sabemos sobre ellas, lo que limita nuestra capacidad para planear su manejo y conservación. Por ello examinamos la composición de mamíferos terrestres en la Hacienda Las Mercedes, que es parte de la recientemente creada reserva forestal del borde norte de Bogotá Thomas van der Hammen. La Hacienda está dedicada a la ganadería y agricultura, pero también tiene el último remanente de bosque andino de planicie fluvio-lacustre de la Sabana, así como diferentes áreas plantadas con especies exóticas. Capturamos mamíferos con trampas Sherman, Dukey Tomahawk en el remanente de bosque andino fluvio-lacustre (área ~13 ha) y en una plantación de eucalipto (área ~1,37 ha). Encontramos cuatro especies de mamíferos nativos: el fara Didelphis pernigra, el curí Cavia aperea, el ratón arrocero Oligoryzmys sp., la comadreja Mustela frenata; además, capturamos una especie exótica, el ratón casero Mus musculus. A pesar de la cercanía de la Hacienda a la ciudad y de las intensas modificaciones hechas allí, aún se encuentran mamíferos silvestres, y ellos aprovechan bosques nativos y exóticos. Estos mamíferos silvestres son una muestra de animales con tolerancia a las actividades rurales, por tanto, sugerimos que ambientes naturales y de origen antrópico sean considerados para la conservación de los mamíferos de Bogotá.

Abundance and reproduction of Porphyriops melanops in a suburban artificial wetland in Bogotá, Colombia

The Spot-flanked Gallinule Porphyriops melanops bogotensis is a subspecies endemic to the Cundinamarca-Boyacá highland plateau. It is critically endangered due to wetlands deterioration and it has been suggested that artificial wetlands may help in its conservation. Therefore, we examined the abundance and reproduction of this gallinule in an artificial wetland in the north of Bogotá, Colombia. We did monthly counts of chicks, sub adults and adults from May 2008 to May 2010 and recorded the duration of each developmental stage. Based on the observation of chicks we determined that gallinules reproduced multiple times in 2008 and 2009, but not in 2010. We found a negative correlation between the numbers of adults and the numbers of chicks and sub adults, suggesting a density-dependent effect. We found no correlation between abundance and rainfall. Monthly abundance of the gallinule during the study period in the natural wetland of Guaymaral, ~1 km from the study site, was negatively correlated with the abundance of gallinules in our artificial wetland. Approximately 46% of chicks became adults. The probability of chicks and sub adults of disappearing from the population was similar: ~0,3. Our results suggest that artificial wetlands can be source habitats for gallinules, and key aspects for the future use of artificial wetlands are: providing nesting sites, protecting them from domestic animals and humans, and maintaining connectivity with neighboring natural wetlands.

No Association of BDNF, COMT, MAOA, SLC6A3, and SLC6A4 Genes and Depressive Symptoms in a Sample of Healthy Colombian Subjects

Background. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the second cause of years lived with disability around the world. A large number of studies have been carried out to identify genetic risk factors for MDD and related endophenotypes, mainly in populations of European and Asian descent, with conflicting results. The main aim of the current study was to analyze the possible association of five candidate genes and depressive symptoms in a Colombian sample of healthy subjects. Methods and Materials. The Spanish adaptation of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was applied to one hundred eighty-eight healthy Colombian subjects. Five functional polymorphisms were genotyped using PCR-based assays: BDNF-Val66Met (rs6265), COMT-Val158Met (rs4680), SLC6A4-HTTLPR (rs4795541), MAOA-uVNTR, and SLC6A3-VNTR (rs28363170). Result. We did not find significant associations with scores of depressive symptoms, derived from the HADS, for any of the five candidate genes (nominal values >0.05). In addition, we did not find evidence of significant gene-gene interactions. Conclusion. This work is one of the first studies of candidate genes for depressive symptoms in a Latin American sample. Study of additional genetic and epigenetic variants, taking into account other pathophysiological theories, will help to identify novel candidates for MDD in populations around the world.

Diferencias en la actividad física y la condición física entre los escolares de secundaria de dos programas curriculares oficiales de Bogotá, Colombia

Durante las últimas cinco décadas se han incrementado las prevalencias de sobrepeso/obesidad, inactividad física y/o baja capacidad cardiorrespiratoria en la población en edad escolar de diversas regiones del planeta, incluida la de Bogotá, Colombia. El objetivo general del estudio fue comparar la condición física y los niveles de actividad física de los estudiantes pertenecientes a dos programas curriculares de la red de colegios públicos de Bogotá, uno de los cuales incluye dos sesiones de actividad física a la semana de 90 minutos cada una. Se llevó a cabo un estudio de diferencia de grupos de corte transversal. Se evaluaron 178 niños del currículo regular y 170 pertenecientes al programa 40 x 40. La condición física se evaluó aplicando el protocolo de alta prioridad de la batería de test ALPHA -Fitness. Las medidas del peso, la talla, el perímetro de cintura, el salto de longitud, la fuerza prensil en ambas manos y la prueba de 20 metros ida y vuelta se realizaron en condiciones estandarizadas. Para evaluar los niveles de AF se utilizó la encuesta mundial de salud a escolares (GSHS). No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre el P-40x40 y el currículo regular en cuanto al peso, la talla, el índice de masa corporal, el perímetro de la cintura, la fuerza de prensión manual y la fuerza explosiva de los miembros inferiores. Sin embargo, la capacidad cardiorrespiratoria fue significativamente menor dentro del P-40x40. En conclusión, la participación en el programa curricular 40 x 40 no estuvo asociada a mejores niveles de condición física.

Theory of Inpatient Circadian Care (TICC): A Proposal for a MiddleRange Theory

The circadian system controls the daily rhythms of a variety of physiological processes. Most organisms show physiological, metabolic and behavioral rhythms that are coupled to environmental signals. In humans, the main synchronizer is the light/dark cycle, although non-photic cues such as food availability, noise, and work schedules are also involved. In a continuously operating hospital, the lack of rhythmicity in these elements can alter the patient’s biological rhythms and resilience. This paper presents a Theory of Inpatient Circadian Care (TICC) grounded in circadian principles. We conducted a literature search on biological rhythms, chronobiology, nursing care, and middle-range theories in the databases PubMed, SciELO Public Health, and Google Scholar. The search was performed considering a period of 6 decades from 1950 to 2013. Information was analyzed to look for links between chronobiology concepts and characteristics of inpatient care. TICC aims to integrate multidisciplinary knowledge of biomedical sciences and apply it to clinical practice in a formal way. The conceptual points of this theory are supported by abundant literature related to disease and altered biological rhythms. Our theory will be able to enrich current and future professional practice.
