The main objective of this study was to describe the lung lesions in slaughtered sheep. A cross-sectional descriptive study that included 26 sheep lungs without clinical signs of disease from the north of the department of Bolivar, Colombia, was carried out. The relative frequency of macroscopic and microscopic lung lesions, as well as the association between macroscopic lesions and body condition were established. Ninety-two percent of the sheep studied showed macroscopic and microscopic lesions. Thirty-two macroscopic lesions were found: pleuritis (34 %), interstitial pneumonia (32 %), embolic pneumonia (13 %), granulomatous pneumonia (6 %), emphysematous bulla (6 %), verminous pneumonia (3 %), suppurative bronchopneumonia (3 %) and atelectasis (3 %). Pleuritis showed a highly significant relationship with body condition (p value <0.01). Forty-one microscopic lesions grouped as inflammatory disorders (63 %), insufflation disturbances, i.e. emphysema and atelectasis (7 %), cell growth disorders (22 %), and microcirculatory disturbances (8 %) were observed. Regarding microscopic lesion chronicity, acute (29 %), subacute (32 %), chronic (37 %) and chronic-active (2 %) lesions were found. This is the first study in Colombia that describes lung lesions in slaughtered sheep. This study concludes that most lesions associated with the respiratory complex are subclinical, and therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the use of diagnostic and control measures to reduce infection rate and economic losses. © 2017 Corporación Colombiana de Investigación Agropecuaria

La fasciolosis es una enfermedad importante causada por el parásito Fasciola hepática rumiantes domésticos y ocasionalmente al hombre por lo cual tiene una gran importancia en salud transporte indiscriminado de animales ha permitido que este tremátodo se asiente y complete el ciclo biológico en regiones del trópico seco, como el norte del Cesar y sur de La Guajira de Colombia. Objetivo: identificar la incidencia de fasciolosis en ovinos y caprinos. Métodos: 1039 ovinos y caprinos seleccionados aleatoriamente sin discriminación de sexo o edad de diez municipios de los dos departamentos. Se colectaron muestras de materia fecal por palpación rectal (apróx. 100 g para diagnóstico parasitológico) mediante la técnica de Dennis a partir de muestras colectadas en agosto del 2015 a mayo del 2016, los huevos recuperados fueron analizados morfológicamente a través de microscopía de luz (aumentos de 10 x y 40 x). Resultados: para el total de la población analizada de 1039 animales de las dos especies, 150 se encontraron positivos (14,43%), un total de 27 en caprinos (18%): 26 hembras y 1 macho; 123 en ovinos (82%), 111 hembras y 12 machos. Conclusiones: se demuestra con este estudio la importancia de fasciolosis en la ganadería ovino-caprina del norte del Cesar y sur de la Guajira para que se tomen medidas de control en procesos de inspección sanitaria por su impacto en salud pública.

There is irrefutable evidence that human activities are affecting the global climate through the production of Green House Gases (GHG) of which methane (CH4) has a high warming potential. Enteric fermentation and manure from ruminants represent about 30 to 40% of the total anthropogenic CH4 emissions. This paper summarizes existing technologies to reduce enteric CH4 emissions in ruminants given emphasis to dietary and rumen manipulation, animal selection/ breeding and improvement of production systems. Differences in enteric CH4 production among animal species based on anatomy of the GI tract, digestive physiology, rumen fermentation and grazing habits are also discussed. Inhibition of enteric CH4 emission is possible through the use of ionophores, organic acids and oils. Feeding plants containing secondary metabolites (i.e. tannins and saponins) can reduce CH4 production. Breeding for improved feed conversion efficiency (lower residual feed intake) is likely to reduce total and per unit product CH4 emissions. Results using the IPCC Tier II model predict that goats and high producing dairy cattle can potentially produce less CH4 emissions per unit of milk than Cebu cattle or sheep, while small ruminants (goats and sheep) produce less CH4 per unit of live weight gain (meat) than cattle. The introduction of improved high quality forages and the implementation of efficient pasture utilization practices (grazing system and stocking rate) can result in most cases in improved animal production and in increased absolute CH4 emissions, but in reduced CH4 per unit of animal product.

Sheep and goats are susceptible to infections with Toxoplasma gondii and could play an important role in the transmission of the zoonotic parasite to human. We conducted a cross sectional study to estimate the seroprevalence and to assess the risk factors for T. gondii seropositivity in small ruminants under traditional husbandry systems. This study was carried out from November 2015 to April 2016 in randomly selected small ruminants (n = 1038) from 48 farms located in Colombia, in the departments of northern Cesar in the north and La Guajira in the south. An indirect ELISA was used to detect IgG antibodies to T. gondii in the animals. A standardized questionnaire was used to obtain information on putative risk factors. We conducted the association analyses by using univariable and multivariate logistic regression and report odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence interval (C.I). The overall seroprevalence in small ruminants was 23.5% (C.I: 21–26.2%). Sheep showed a higher seroprevalence (25.1% C.I: 22.4–28.6%) than goats (18.4% C.I: 22.4–28.6%). The association analysis recognized as risk factors for T. gondii seropositivity farming pigs in addition to small ruminants (OR = 1.96 C.I: 1.414–2.743), the inexistence of manure heap (OR = 2.254 C.I: 1.480–3.433) and drinking water from locally aqueducts (OR = 1.489 C.I: 1.006–2.204). The results of the study confirmed that exposure to T. gondii is common in sheep and goats in dry Caribbean regions of Colombia.
