For this study, an inquiry was applied to 20 milk producers, pertaining to an enterprise group of management from the Valleys of Ubaté and Chiquinquirá (Colombia), which included variables related to the prevention practice and the control of bovine mastitis with the aim of obtaining an excellent milk quality. For the analysis of all answers a descriptive statistic was used. The cattle management practices, applied by the cattlemen, presented different percentages regarding the implementation: 10% accomplished the blunting, 75% of the evaluated cattleman ordered properly the sequence of the milking routine, 90% practiced the washings or the predipping of the udders, a 70% segregated cows if a clinic mastitis case was detected; the sealing of the nipples took place in a 95% of the cases, also a correct cover of the sealant was presented. The identification of the treated cows with antibiotic was achieved in a 75% of the farms, the 90% of the cattlemen know the concept of milk inhibitors and the dry cow therapy was implemented by the 30% of the producers. Good milking practices are relevant aspects which should be known and applied routinely by the producers, since they generate benefits for obtaining an excellent milk quality and it conforms also the initial path to compete with highly competitive foreign markets.

To determine the protection factors for mastitis, questionnaires were applied to determine the control measures carry out for prevention and management of the bovine mastitis in 15 farms, managed under a double purpose system in the municipality of Monteria (Colombia). The diagnosis of the bovine mastitis was established by the CMT, RCS and bacteriological cultures (isolation). Variables were crossed with the results of the different diagnosis test using contingency charts. To determine the association, a Chi-square test and the Odds Ratio (OR) with their respective confidence interval (95%) were calculated. As general protection factors the direct administration by the owners and a permanency higher than 50% of the time was found. During milking, the division of work by the milkers regarding the milking procedure, the support of the calf, the implementation of sanity of nipples, when drying of nipples was acceptable, nipple sealing and the suckling of the calves at the end of milking were positive. The culling of cows with mastitis during the last year, the application of the dry cow therapy, the disinfection of the tip of nipples previous the dry cow therapy and the written delivery of sanitary recommendations were identified as protection factors in the aspects of practices of prevention.

Milk quality is affected by mastitis and practices used during and after milking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate milking practices, hygienic and nutritional quality of milk produced in Granada, Antioquia, by no probabilistic sampling, ten farms belonging to the association ASOGRAN were selected. Assessment of milking practices was realized by direct observation; mastitis detection was made at each farm using the California Test (CMT). At the end of the milking process two samples with an interval of 60 days were taken, each one analyzed for colony forming units (CFU), somatic cell count (SCC), percentages of protein, fat and total solids; during the interval the producers were trained in good milking practices (GMP). Statistical analyzes were performed using the Wilcoxon test. Before training, failure in the GMP was found. Significant differences for the UFC and mastitis tests before and after training were found; furthermore 24% of the mammary glands were affected by subclinical mastitis. In the hygienic milk quality, a mean CFU 6x105 and 3x105, respectively, was detected. The SCC was not significantly different, reporting average values of 630,000 and 750,000, respectively. The nutritional quality showed percentages of fat, protein and total solids, higher than those required by Colombian law. The results indicate the importance of the application of GMP on milk quality.

The aim of an appropriate milking procedure is to reduce the risk of milk contamination. This work studied the risk factors in milking practices that affect the hygienic (CFU) and sanitary quality (SCC) of milk tanks from the “Mid Magdalena” and ”Atlantic Coast” regions of Colombia. A checklist that explored pre-milking, milking and post-milking activities as possible factors influencing CFU and SCC in 23 buffalo farms was applied. On the day of the checklist survey, samples of cold milk in tank to test for bacteria counts were taken, finding an average of 182.6 ± 295.4 x 103 CFU/mL; also tested for SCC was tested and an average of 137.1 ± 158.9 x 103 sc/mL was found. As hygienic quality protective factors generating a low CFU count in bulk tank floor tidiness, udder and teat washing, hand washing frequency, duration of teat sealing, wiping of sealing dip, presence of filter in the milk container, the use of disposable filters, milking the buffalo cows positive for mastitis towards the end of the milking process and cooling the milk at 4°C in less than 2 hours after milking was identified. The risk factors associated with high CFU counts are the absence of hands washing with OR (Odds Ratio) 1.7 (p= 0,003), teat sealing with OR 1.07 (p= 0,003), use of disposable filter in milk container, and the period of time between milking and tank storage with OR 1.83 (p= 0.4). The risk associated with high SCC ́s is material for hand drying with OR 1.04 (p= 0.002).

In the veterinary field mastitis is one of the diseases that represents a lot of losses for the milk producers due to that is a disease affecting much of the bovine population in the herds worldwide. Is by this reason that is necessary to know all the relevant aspects about this disease, as well as to know all the details about the structure of bovine mammary gland with all its defense mechanisms and understand the physiopathology of this disease. In this work is going to develop all the relatively about the bovine mastitis, the structures of the bovine mammary gland, mastitis, its classification, its physiopathology, its pathogenic agents, the adequate milking process, its prevalence and finally come to discuss the different treatments for bovine mastitis that are used in the actual time. Also the studies developed worldwide that have positive results in alternative treatments. Due to the mastitis is one of the most serious problems that faces the dairy herds is necessary to know all the factors that are developed in depth here to combat this disease with more effectively.
