Introduction: mental health is an integral part of health and well-being, as reflected in the definition of the World Health Organization, since it is understood as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not only the absence of conditions or diseases. In health professionals, it is common for workers to present physical and mental health alterations, which are related to existing occupational risks and the work environment, due to the complexity of their professional practice and sometimes to work schedules. Objective: to describe the mental burden in formal caregivers (nurses and social workers) of people with a diagnosis of psychiatric illness in a private institution in Bogotá. Methodology: research within the quantitative paradigm, cross-sectional descriptive design. The NASA-TLX scale was used to collect the information. Results: Average mental load was found in 100% of the participants, both for nurses and social workers. Conclusion: Professional stress is related as a consequence of the imbalance between the demands of the job and the capacities, resources or needs of nurses and social workers, which turns out to be a model of emotional, cognitive, behavioral and physiological reaction to adverse components of the functions required by the position. Recommendations: It is important to continue with the investigation of mental burden in nurses and social workers, so that it can identify if there is a mental burden in professionals who are in charge of the care or management of people with psychiatric pathologies.
