The present research was carried out in orderto determine the Listeria sp prevalence and its role in the animal
reproduction behaviorand importance in Public Health. In 13 dairy herds with a population of 320 anlmals, 73 Holstein cows were chosen at random. In these, milk, vaginal swabs, faecal and blood samples were taken and examined for mastitis. Ten herds had positive isolations of Listeria sp. with a general prevalence of 35.6% and for milk samples 24.6%, vaginal swabs 2.7% and 9.5% in faeces. The bacterial isolations were associated with increased servicesconceptlon rates, less milk production, longer calving intervals, and more empty cows and health problems in the herds. A significative association with mastitis and vaginitis problems was not found, neither with sewage and silage feeding and other animal species in farms. The high prevalence in milk samples is correlated with the figures reported by others researchers in raw milk and cheese in the Bogotá Savannah and this confirms the importance of this microorganism for human beings and the necessity to establish prevention and control measures for food protection.
