Pesticides and the causes of poisonings that can be intentional or accidental, cause a broad social problem, it means, the mental health of the population and the costs to the health system of poisoning care. It’s a descriptive cross-sectional study of pesticide poisoning notifications in Bogotá D.C. during the period 2015 to 2017, characterizing variables (sex, age, level of education, marital status), spatial - temporal (location, place of intoxication, date of exposure), specific to the event (type of exposure, route of exposure, name of the substance, hospitalization and final condition). Of the 1418 cases of poisoning with pesticides that were reported in SIVIGILA in Bogotá during the period 2015 to 2017, 82.5% (n = 1,170 cases) are due to attempted suicide, occurring in the female sex with 51% (n = 717) and 49% (n = 701) in males, the most reported pesticide was carbamate as active ingredient aldicarb with 35.9% (n = 509), sodium fluoroacetate and praletrin. The localities with the highest incidence of poisoning with pesticides were Bosa, Kennedy, Usme, Ciudad Bolívar and Engativá. There are 9 cases related with death. The 2.8% (n = 39) of the cases are confirmed by laboratory.
The information corresponding to the percentage of suicide due to pesticide poisoning can be affected by cases that were not reported to the health system, but could be affected by legal medicine and cases of occupational exposure were excluded. Pesticide poisonings in Bogotá were mainly suicidal, in women between 15 and 29 years of age.
