ln order to compare economically and agrononically fowpruning and conducting Systems of field grown tomato plants, “chonto” type, a trial was carried out with two varietics “Santa Clara” and “Santa Cruz". The experiment was arranged in a two by four factorial, completely randomized block design, with four repetitions. Each plot was confonned by 35 plants, in five rows distanced 0.90 m, for a total of 22.000 plants/ha. Yield components and fruit diameter were measured and the production per hectare was estimated and the results completed with a cost -benefit analysis. All treatnents which included pruned plants of both varieties, surpassed control, regarding fruit weight, weight of fruit production per plant, total yield and equatorial fruit diameter. Furtherntore the two Controls showed a very low rentability and the fruit quality did not permit a good income. As a the practice for this area the system of two plants per site was evaluated, resulting positive in production, compared with all treatments, but with high costs, whit decteased it a rentability. It is suggested to take this practice luto account for the evaluations and manage tite plants with pruning, either at one or two axis, with a density of around 22.000 plants per hectare.
