Calcium and boron are two elements widely; related to quality and yield of fruits and vegetables. Deficiences originated by the absence of these elemens have caused high losses specially in the production and presentation of tomatoes and cucurbits. Celery is a very susceptible species to two physiological disorders denominated hollow stem and black heart, both of them related with small amounts of B and Ca. Within the tissues or the absence of these elements in the soil.
The present trial had as objectives to evalúate soil applications of Ca and B to a celery cultivation in a Bogotá Savannah soil, on the yield in aerial fresh weights and crop quality. A randomized complete block design in split plots was used; in the first plot dosages of Ca were added and in the second one dosages of B. For these elements the used sources were calcium nitrate (20.5% of Ca) and bórax (10% of B). Three repetitions were done and the experimental unit was made up of 80 plants located in a 7.5 m2. The measured variables were (sq. m) / square meters fresh plant weight, plant length number of open leaves, percentage of plants affected by black hear and/or hollow stems.
Forthe variables fresh plant weight, stem length and number of leaves no significant differences were found between the two treatments. In regard to the presence of physiological disorders an remarkable incidence of black heart was observed when Ca was not applied, while this desordes decreased as Ca dosage increased ¡n the soil. Hollow stem incidence was high in the plots with B absence and it decreased as the dosage of this micronutriment was increased moreover, there was an interaction between the two elements in the percentaje of hollow stem and also it was found a lower concentration of these two elements within the tissues of the affected plants. Boron and Calcium positive action was demostrated by the absence of celery plants affected by these two physiological disorders.
