The Caslick’s surgery is a technique that is performed to prevent infections processes in the mare’s reproductive tract.
The object of the following work was to evalúate the State of the vagina, using vaginal citology and hematology of the mares with and without Caslick's surgery. For this, we used a sample of 45 mares, 20 with Caslick’s surgery (c/c) and 25 without Caslick's surgery (s/c), evaluating as parame- ters the vaginal frotis, vaginal pH and the differential count of leucocytes.
In the vaginal frotis the comparative valué for basal cells, reserve, citólisis and flora yielded a statistical significance of 0.000. 0.400, 0.900 and 000 resepectively for mares (c/c), while (s/c) mares yielded a statiscal significance or 0.269, 0.038, 0.615. 0.385 respectively.
There were no statistically significant differences in terms of the vagina's pH. In the differential count we observed differences in Lymphocytes, segmented neutrophils, and eosinophil yieldly mean count valúes for c/c mares of 5.890. 4504.50 and 519.75 respectively, while mean count valúes for s/c mares were 7042.50, 8138 and 313. We conclude that while caslick’s surgery (c/c) can prevent the genital tract from being contami- nated with feces. The procedure can generate inflammatory reactions which may cause a predis- position to other process, principally of infections nature where these do not necessarily need to be of the intestinal origin. Therefore, we propose that Caslick’s surgery be used in animáis with anatomic deformities applying strict standard of hygene in the pre and post-operativa phases in addion to clinical follow-up.
